Prompting discussion about particular topics (such as Deaf issues) ensures large amounts of NGT data in which participants are more concerned with content and less with monitoring their output. Elicitation, on the other hand, ensures output of a particular type (notably narratives) and with similar content. Since part of the elicitation materials are also used in research of other (sign) languages, the data allow for cross-linguistic comparison. Since the content is quite clear, transcription of the elicited data is facilitated.

To cover all the necessary detail, four camera's have been used. Two digital HDV cameras are used for recordings of the upper body of the participants. The high resolution (1920 x 1080) of new HD formats produces such detailed recordings that the face and head do not need a separate close-up recording. In addition, two digital miniDV cameras recorded each participant's signing from above.
